Hurricane Ian was the deadliest hurricane to hit the state of Florida since the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. While officially a Category 4 Atlantic hurricane, it was only 2 mph of sustained wind speed away from being a category 5. Its ranks among the top 5 strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the contiguous United States. Ian caused at least 157 fatalities and catastrophic damage with losses estimated to be more than over $50 billion. Southwest Florida cities like Fort Myers Beach and Naples were particularly hard hit.
